humanities

humanities is a category that encompasses several artistic, historical, and philosophical disciplines. In units one and two we explored the humanities through the philosophical texts of Locke, Marx, and Plato. In units 3 and 4 we analyzed historical texts about the Rwandan genocide and the civil rights movement.

The humanities are how we come to understand what it means to be human. This seems like a basic concept and one that would not need much studying; however, because of the history and current state of mass dehumanization it is extremely important to study the humanities. They can be considered “impractical” because they do not often yield and immediate physical solutions to problems, but I have found that studying them yield something far more important-empathy. Empathy is what allows humans to connect as one human family as opposed to turning to violence and oppression.
